Reindeer – Christmas Cupcake Topper
This ‘Reindeer Cupcake Topper Tutorial’ is a basic stepping stone to get you started on working with fondant. Make this simple reindeer cupcake topper and add Christmassy feel to your cupcakes. Aarti got the inspiration from her 3 years old nephew who is fascinated with reindeers.

My journey into learning more about cake decoration from ‘Fondbites School of Sugar Art’ and my kids were the two factors that led me to join the bandwagon of commercial homebakers of Delhi.
Tools Required
- Fondant in white, red, black and brown colours
- Rolling pin
- Tylose/CMC
- Circle cutter of different sizes
- Leaf shaping tool
- Art brush for sticking fondant pieces together and some glue
- Sugarcraft knife
White Fondant- Base of the topper
Step 1
Take some white fondant and condition it by stretching and mixing some (a pinch or two) tylose/CMC powder till it is of a soft consistency. Roll it between your palms to make a small ball.
Step 2
Using the rolling pin, flatten the white fondant ball into approximately 1 mm thickness.
Step 3
Take circle cutter (Mine had a diameter of 6.5 cm).
Step 4
Cut a neat circle and clean the edges, if frayed, using fondant leaf shaping tool.
Brown Fondant- Face of the Reindeer
Step 5
Take some brown fondant and condition it by stretching and mixing some (a pinch or two) tylose/CMC powder till it is of a soft consistency. Roll it between your palms to make a small ball.
Step 6
Using the rolling pin, flatten the white fondant ball into approximately 1 mm thickness.
Step 7
Take circle cutter (Mine had a diameter of 4.5 cm).
Step 8
Cut a neat circle and clean the edges, if frayed, using fondant leaf shaping tool.
Red Fondant- Nose of the Reindeer
Step 9
Take some red fondant and condition it by stretching and mixing some (a pinch or two) tylose/CMC powder till it is of a soft consistency. Roll it between your palms to make a small ball.
Step 10
Using the rolling pin, flatten the white fondant ball into approximately 1 mm thickness.
Step 11
Take circle cutter (Mine had a diameter of 3 cm).
Step 12
Cut a neat circle and clean the edges, if frayed, using fondant leaf shaping tool.
Ears
Step 13
Make 2 pea sized balls of brown fondant.
Step 14
Shape them into teardrop shape.
Step 15
Press each of the drops flat using your thumb. Using the curved side of leaf shaping tool press a little along the centre line. Using pointed edge of the same tool, make markings on the ear. Pinch the top of the ears.
Horns
Step 16
Roll some black fondant thin. Using sugarcraft knife mark the antennae as per the markings given in the picture above.
Step 17
Cut along the markings and smoothen the frayed if any, using leaf shaping tool.
Eyes and Accessories
Step 18
Make 3 balls of red fondant ½ the size of a pea. Make 2 balls of black fondant for the eyes. They need to be smaller than the red balls.
Assemble
Step 19
Keep white fondant circle. Using some glue, stick the brown circle over white- aligning them at the base. Now stick the red circle over the brown circle- aligning it at the base too.
Step 20
Take small black balls made for eyes and press a little to flatten them. Then, stick them on the brown fondant circle almost touching the red circle as shown in the photo.
Step 21
Now, stick the brown ears on the edge of brown circle as shown in the photo. Then in between the ears, stick the antennae pieces touching the brown circle. Make sure to leave some space between the two antennae.
Step 22
Stick the 3 red balls partly on the base of the right antenna and party on the brown circle. Also, cut a ‘D’ shape small piece from white fondant and stick it on the red circle.
And your reindeer cupcake topper is ready!
